BRYANT, William Cullen (1794-1878), Autograph Letter Signed / Unsigned Cabinet Card
BRYANT, William Cullen (1794-1878)
Autograph Letter Signed / Unsigned Cabinet Card
This mainstay of the 19th century literary scene was a popular, influential liberal journalist and long-time editor of the "New York Evening Post," but is best remembered as a prolific poet whose best-known piece, "Thanatopsis," was written as a teenager. ALS, 1p, 5" X 8", New York, NY, 11 January 1865. Addressed to Richard Lathert. Very good. Lightly age toned, with inoffensive small mounting trace at top margin. On lightly-lined paper, Bryant boldly pens in rich brown ink the president of the Board of Directors of the Great Historic Insurance Company that "I am sorry that an indispensable engagement deprives me of the pleasure of accepting the invitation with which I have been honored, to the Annual Dinner of the Directors of your Board.." Accompanied by an outstandingly bright and pristine cabinet card photograph of Bryant, heavy stock round-cornered (as issued) 4¼" X 6½". Verso blank, but fine print below image reveals publication in New York, NY by Sarony in 1873. Bold full facsimile Bryant signature along bottom. Famous old-age three-quarters head-and-shoulders portrait of white-bearded Bryant with what appears to be a coarse cloth swathed about his shoulders toga-style. A superb pair. .

BRYANT, William Cullen
Autograph Manuscript Signed (Ams): "the Love of God
New York, 9 May 1864. Hardcover. A handwritten poem on an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper SIGNED "William Cullen Bryant" and dated at the conclusion. Bound in 3/4 dark blue morocco leather and blue cloth titled in gilt on the front cover containing the poem, an engraved portrait of Bryant, a hand-lettered calligraphic title page in red and black, and a typed transcript of the poem which consists of 18 lines with a number of differences in punctuation only from the printed version. FROM THE PROVENCAL OF BERNARI RASCAS All things that are on earth shall wholly pass away, Except the love of God, which shall live and last for aye. The forms of men shall be as they had never been; The blasted groves shall lose their fresh and tender green; The birds of the thicket shall end their pleasant song, And the nigthingale shall cease to chant the evening long. The kine of the pasture shall feel the dart that kills, And all the fair white flocks shall perish from the hills. The goat and antlered stag, the wolf and the fox, The wild boar of the wood, and the chamois of the rocks, And the strong and fearless bear, in the trodden dust shall lie, And the dolphin of the sea, and the mighty whale, shall die. And realms shall be dissolved, and empires be no more, And they shall bow to death, who ruled from shore to shore; And the great globe itself, (so the holy writings tell,) With the rolling firmament, where the starry armies dwell, Shall melt with fervent heat--they shall all pass away, Except the love of God, which shall live and last for aye. Contents Fine; front cover and first two blank pages neatly detached, leather on spine deteriorated. Overall Very Good .

BRYANT, William Cullen
Autograph Manuscript (Am) of Thanatopsis with Signed Card
3 May 1878. Manuscript. Handwritten conclusion of Bryant's most famous poem and one of the best-known poems of the 19th century--"Thanatopsis"--on a 4-7/8" x 3-3/4" sheet of paper laid down on a slightly larger album size sheet; together with a small calling card SIGNED "William Cullen Bryant" and dated "May 3d 1878. With an engraved portrait of Bryant. There are a few changes in punctuation from the published version. Any MANUSCRIPT excerpt of this poem, especially such a substantial one as this, is quite rare. So live that when thy summons comes to join The innumerable caravan which moves To that mysterious realm where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of Death, Thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him and lies down to pleasant dreams. Near Fine. Scarce and desirable Thanatopsis," written when Bryant was 15 years old and first published in THE NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW in September 1817, became Bryant's most celebrated poem and is often acknowledged as "the first great American poem." Although the poem remained popular throughout Bryant's life, autograph fair copies are surprisingly rare with only two examples offered at auction in the past 50 years, the last being at Christie's in 1993 containing the same excerpt as present here.
